don't use the same user name and password for multiple websites

security

Are you guilty of using the same user name and password accross multiple websites where you are required to login? If so, then you should really stop doing this. This can be a very dangerous practise as described below. Consider the following scenario:

You create a new account at the website abc.com using your typical user name and password. Now suppose that abc.com gets hacked with the attacker able to get access to your user name and password information or the owner of abc.com is an unethical individual who is simply harvesting login information from people creating accounts.

The person who now has your user and password information starts trying it on common sites such as Google, Yahoo, Facebook, Twitter, etc. and online banking sites. So in the above situation, if your Facebook account uses the same user name and password as abc.com, your account is now compromised.

Worse yet, think about what could happen if that person was able to get into your online banking site…

Obviously, some accounts are more important than others but at the very least you should make sure your most important accounts have a unique user name and password.
